10/27/23 – Here we present an antique British Board of Ordnance Proofed ÄúExtraproofÄù Flintlock Pistol by John Sharpe, made around 1812 in London England. John Sharpe was a gunmaker working from about 1808 to 1831. This pistol was later converted to Percussion or “cap and ball”,likely in the 1850’s. We are not experts on these weapons but have concluded this was a converted example based on our research.Many of these were made in England but then found their way to North America and the colonies for self-defense and for trading for goods and services during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This is a large fighting pistol with an octagonal brass barrel that’s marked ÄúEXTRAPROOFÄù along with British proof stamps, and “LONDON”. Comes in 62 caliber. The overall condition is very good with clean brass and nice patina on the blued parts. The action is excellent.The bore is smooth and patinated with natural aging. The stock shows use and some minor splitting around the muzzle of the barrel, as well as a crack in the bottom of the stock. Clear markings are GR proof and Board of Ordnance broad arrow. ÄúTOWERÄù , ÄúSHARPE”, and “LONDONÄù on the lock and barrel.
