4/10/24 – This is a “combination model” of the Colt Baby Dragoon / M1849 Pocket Model revolver. As the revolver evolved during production, several features changed, and the Baby Dragoon eventually morphed into the 1849 Pocket Model. As production continued, the round cylinder stop-slots gave way to oval slots, which eventually became rectangular, and finally became rectangular with rounded guide grooves. In the serial number ranges of about 11,000 to 15,500 a number of odd variations began to appear, as old parts were used up, new features were added, and the final form of the Model 1849 Pocket Revolver began to appear. It is in this range that the round trigger guard began to appear, resulting in some strange feature combinations. In this serial number range, Colt was manufacturing the standard ÄúBaby DragoonÄù models, standard Model 1849 Pocket Models, as well as strange Äúcombination modelsÄù like the ÄúSquare BackÄù Model 1849 Pocket, or a round trigger guard ÄúBaby DragoonÄù (called by some the Pre-Wells Fargo Model). This one has a round trigger guard, rectangular cylinder stops, and has a 4″ barrel with no ramrod. It is all matching. Cylinder scene is not visible. Overall, it is in fair condition, but there is heavy brown “attic patina” throughout. A couple of noticeable roll marks on the cylinder. The bore has decent rifling but there is noticeable oxidation and surface rust throughout. Fitted with period-correct wood grips – a blemish on the left side. Fully functional.
