1/13/25 – This is a great example of a British Afghanistan Medal. These medals were sanctioned in 1881 under the rule of Queen Victoria. They were awarded to those British and Indian troops who fought in the Second Afghan War between the British Raj (India) and the Emirate of Afghanistan.This medal is in great shape and still has its cloth hanger, the cloth hanger does have a hole in it from mounting, as well as some sticky tack keeping the cloth closed.The front of the medal depicts Queen Victoria with the Latin script “Victoria Regina ET Imperiatrix”. This translates to “Queen Victoria and Empress”. The reverse depicts an Indian Elephant carrying a cannon and Indian soldier, flanked by British and Indian troops, with the Inscription “Afghanistan” and the dates “1878-79-80” on the lower section.Both motifs on the medal are still in great condition with only minor wear on the reverse motif. This medal is identified on the edge of the medal, and was awarded toPrivate W. Last of the 10th Royal Hussars also known as the Prince of Wale’s Own.The 10th Royal Hussars saw action during the Battle of Ali Masjid in 1878, the battle resulted in a British victory.
